Galesburg Building Will be THE Junior High for CUSD 101
The special board meeting that was held this past Saturday at the multi-purpose room drew a crowd, both from Erie and Galesburg residents. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss "use of facilities" for the 2009-2010 school year. Superintendent John Wyrick opened the meeting with a presentation showing how the cuts in the Kansas budget have affected the funding for schools, particularly in 101. These cuts were going to force combined classes at Galesburg Elementary, and large classes in Erie Elementary next year. Mr. Wyrick went on to explain how the large and combined classes were not what was best for "The Kids". Doing what was best for the students was the reason for the meeting.
Mr. Wyrick then brought up the different scenarios for next year, recommending two for the board to consider. Scenario one was making the Galesburg facility the Junior High for the district, and making the Erie Elementary/Junior High building the Elementary School for the district. This would mean that all Junior High students from Erie/Stark/Walnut would be moved to Galesburg, and the Elementary students from Galesburg would be transferred to Erie. "This gives the Junior High kids their own identity", stated Mr. Wyrick.
Scenario two was to close Galesburg and transfer all students to Erie.
After Mr. Wyrick's presentation, school board president Jack Simmons allowed those from the audience that signed up to speak. There were 24 patrons who got in front of the microphone to speak. 23 made their case for the Junior High in Galesburg, and one wanted things to stay as-is.
After hearing from the patrons, the board went into executive session to discuss non-elected personal for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes they came out and Mike Page requested an additional 10 minutes.
When they returned, Jack Simmons made the nomination that for 2009-2010, Galesburg become the Junior High, and the elementary student at Galesburg be transferred to Erie. The motion was seconded, and was approved 6-0.
