Erie Awarded $754k Housing Grant
Erie sustained damage to about 7 percent of its housing in the 2007 flood, according to the statement. The city will use its grant to create infrastructure for a new subdivision. The subdivision in northern Erie will be anchored on the north by a
new high school that is under construction and on the south by a new assisted living facility, Guesthouse Estates, which has been completed. The city will provide the funding for the installation of water and sewer as its match. The subdivision will result in 32 lots ready for housing construction. City Clerk Cindy Lero said the land in the new subdivision totals about 15 acres. In addition to building water and sewer lines in the neighborhood, the city will build the streets and all other infrastructure. While some developers have expressed interest in building homes in the subdivision, there  are no agreements with the city yet. Lero said the city just received a letter notifying it was awarded a grant, so there is no time line on the project yet.
Erie Adopts City Park Plan
The Erie City Council adopted an extensive plan for additions to Erie City Park during its meeting on Monday evening. The park plan was presented by Holly Powers of  Thayer, who is with Landworks Studio, Olathe. The plan includes several different projects that the Erie Park Board hopes to complete in phases through grants, donations from local contractors and volunteer labor. Erie City Clerk Cindy Lero said the plan includes several new features that will be added to the existing park and to the expanded portion of the park that will be built south of the existing park. The new park land was bought from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s floodplain buyout program. Houses on the land will be demolished to make way for the park expansion. Under FEMA rules, no structures can be built on floodplain buyout land.
The planned new features include:
• Playground near southwest corner of existing park that will use natural material surfacing and incorporate natural play structures and traditional play components.
• Amphitheater near south-west corner of existing park. The character and style will be
determined later.
• Ten-foot-wide hiking and biking trail about a quarter of a mile long with a concrete  surface, primarily near the center of the existing park.
• Multipurpose sports courts near the northeast corner of the existing park. The two courts would be 50 foot by 80 foot and provide play for tennis, basketball and  volleyball. The court surface would be 3/4 of an inch thick.
• An 85-foot by 45-foot skateboard park south of the courts that would have a skate
pro surface with galvanized steel railings and 12 skate components.
• Three pedestrian bridges over existing drainage way.
• A 10-stall asphalt parking lot on the north side of the expanded portion of the park.
• T-ball/Wiffleball field near the center of the expanded park.
• Restroom building with shower amenities including a covered picnic area south of
the new parking lot.
• Six RV stalls on the west side of the expanded park surfaced with asphalt and  including water, sewer and electrical hookups, picnic table and grill.
• New swimming pool in the location of the existing pool with six lanes for swimming
competitions and zero-depth entry to assist elderly, small children and people with disabilities.
Lero said the park board will prioritize the improvements and try to incorporate them in
about 10 phases. The board would like to start with the new RV lots, which would replace the existing RV lots and free up area in the existing park. Click HERE to see plan layout and details.
